Rain from Nowhere

Murray Hartin’s poem, Rain from Nowhere (written February 2007) was published in the Daily Telegraph today. He wrote it in about three hours, “to highlight the horrendous circumstances many of our farmers and the rural community (affected by the drought), are now facing.” I must say it got a tear out of me.

His cattle didn’t get a bid, they were fairly bloody poor,
What was he going to do? He couldn’t feed them anymore,
The dams were all but dry, hay was thirteen bucks a bale,
Last month’s talk of rain was just a fairytale.

His credit had run out, no chance to pay what’s owed,
Bad thoughts ran through his head as he drove down Gully Road
‘Geez, great grandad bought the place back in 1898,
Now I’m such a useless bastard, I’ll have to shut the gate.’

‘Can’t support my wife and kids, not like dad and those before,
Christ, Grandma kept it going while Pop fought in the war.’
With depression now his master, he abandoned what was right,
There’s no place in life for failures, he’d end it all tonight.

There were still some things to do, he’d have to shoot the cattle first,
Of all the jobs he’d ever done, that would be the worst.
He’d have a shower, watch the news, then they’d all sit down for tea.
Read his kids a bedtime story, watch some more TV.

Kiss his wife goodnight, say he was off to shoot some roos.
Then in a paddock far away he’d blow away the blues.
But he drove in the gate and stopped – as he always had
To check the roadside mailbox – and found a letter from his Dad.

Now his dad was not a writer, Mum did all the cards and mail
But he knew the style from the notebooks that he used at cattle sales.
He sensed the nature of its contents, felt moisture in his eyes,
Just the fact his dad had written was enough to make him cry.

‘Son, I know it’s bloody tough, it’s a cruel and twisted game,
This life upon the land, when you’re screaming out for rain.
There’s no candle in the darkness, not a single speck of light
But don’t let the demon get you, you have to do what’s right.’

‘I don’t know what’s in your head but push the bad thoughts well away,
See, you’ll always have your family at the back end of the day.
You have to talk to someone, and yes I know I rarely did,
But you have to think about Fiona and think about the kids.’

‘I’m worried about you son, you haven’t rung for quite a while,
I know the road you’re on ’cause I’ve walked every bloody mile.
The date? December 7 back in 1983,
Behind the shed I had the shotgun rested in the brigalow tree.’

‘See, I’d borrowed way too much to buy the Johnson place,
Then it didn’t rain for years and we got bombed by interest rates.
The bank was at the door, I didn’t think I had a choice,
I began to squeeze the trigger – that’s when I heard your voice.’

‘You said “Where are you Daddy? It’s time to play our game,
I’ve got Squatter all set up, you might get General Rain.”
It really was that close, you’re the one that stopped me son,
And you’re the one that taught me there’s no answer in a gun.

‘Just remember people love you, good friends won’t let you down,
Look, you might have to swallow pride and get a job in town.
Just ’til things come good, son, you’ve always got a choice
And when you get this letter ring me, cause I’d love to hear your
voice.’

Well he cried and laughed and shook his head then put the truck in gear,
Shut his eyes and hugged his dad in a vision that was clear,
Dropped the cattle at the yards, put the truck away
Filled the troughs the best he could and fed his last ten bales of hay.

Then he strode towards the homestead, shoulders back and head held high,
He still knew the road was tough but there was purpose in his eye.
He called for his wife and children, who’d lived through all his pain,
Hugs said more than words – he’d come back to them again.

They talked of silver linings, how good times always follow bad,
Then he walked towards the phone, picked it up and rang his Dad.
And while the kids set up the Squatter, he hugged his wife again,
Then they heard the roll of thunder and they smelt the smell of rain.

Great Soccer Skills

I was surprised today when one of my colleagues asked if it was my Thomas Gray in the paper today. I quickly rushed to the paper and read the following:

2008 Rooball Carnival

Thomas had his first Rooball Carnival on today. Thomas played 4 games today, each game having 10 minute halves. He went really well for the first couple of games, but by the fourth game you could tell that not only he, but the rest of his team also, were lacking in concentration.

His first game was against South Dubbo Wanderers Power, his next game was against Orana Spurs, then Narromine Tigers and lastly Westside Red.

It was a very cold day (as it always is for the Rooball Carnival, apparently), but Luci helped keep us warm by packing the big jackets, beanies and some warm milo.

Lachlan enjoyed the day, swapping his Woody toy for Hamish’s Buzzy toy (even though he has his own Buzzy at home!!) and even joining in for a kick of the ball against the big kids during one of the breaks!!

Thomas was very proud of his trophy, and quickly cleared off some space on his dresser to display it.

Hope you enjoy the photos.

Nothing like resting on the lounge

I came across this via Digg, and really, there is nothing like resting on the lounge with a beer and strumming the guitar, now, is there??

Upgrade to Firefox 3

Firefox 3 has been released and I’ve upgraded – I must say that it seems to be much quicker than Firefox 2, and I do like the integration with my MacBook Pro – now it looks like it does belong there!  :-)

I have made some changes to the default settings though:

  1. Installed Stylish extension – this is great!!! Then installed these styles:
  2. Style – Google Web Search (dark grey design)
  3. Style – Google Image Search (dark grey design)
  4. Style – Favicon on Bookmarks Toolbar for Mac
  5. Style – Remove the Throbber Button
  6. Style – Combine Stop/Reload Buttons
  7. Style – Gmail Redesigned
  8. Set Gmail to launch for mailto links
  9. Installed Del.icio.us Bookmarks Toolbar Extension
  10. Installed PicLens
  11. Set the Search Bar to give results in a new tab, rather than the current one.

Anyway, a great browser, so why not get it and try something new???

Apple Store, Sydney opens

It looks impressive, don’t it?? I think I would have enjoyed going to the opening of the new Apple Store in Sydney. Located on George Street, apparently it has the biggest sheets of laminated glass in the world, biggest Apple Logo in the world, biggest Genius Bar in the world. It’s not the largest store in the world however, it does come close – it’s the second largest!! The glass is 15 metres high!! Pretty Amazing.

Martin Levins has some more pictures which are worth a look.

Next time I’m in Sydney, I’ve definitely got to call in and have a look, and try to keep my wallet in my pocket. :-)

Thomas’ 5th Birthday

Today was Thomas’ 5th Birthday – it’s hard to believe.

He got up in the morning and opened his presents from Lachlan and Mum and Dad. Lachlan gave him Thomas some books, a Toy Story puzzle, and a Connect 4 game. Mum & Dad gave him a new, bigger bike.

Katie & Greg gave him a Hungry Hungry Hippos game, which proved to be a hit with both Thomas and Lachlan!!

In the afternoon, we had the family over for afternoon tea and birthday cake.

And Lachlan, couldn’t resist giving a cheesy smile at the end of the day.

Thomas’ 5th Birthday Party

P1000748.JPGWe held Thomas’ 5th Birthday Party today. It was actually his first real birthday party – you know – with his own friends. Thomas wanted to have a spooky theme, so Luci created an invitation for Thomas to give to five of his friends from pre-school. Thomas decided to invite Clay, Jesse, Riley, Katie and Sorelle. Unfortunately, Clay had his cousin’s birthday party on the same day as Thomas’ party, so wasn’t able to make it.

We got up in the morning and set about decorating the house and table and getting out the food:

Did you like those cakes with snakes crawling out of them? What about the Ghost Biscuits?

Luci set up some games for the kids to play:

  • Ghost, Ghost, Witch (like Duck, Duck, Goose)
  • Eyeball & Spoon race (like egg & spoon race – Luci found some rubber eyeballs from the $2 shop)
  • Pass the Revolting Parcel (complete with some scary prizes)
  • Pin the Eyes on the Ghost
  • Swampy Sludge dig (Luci hid some coins in a revolting green mixture of porridge)

Then we had the cake – a spooky bat cave.

Thomas did enjoy his party. Here’s what he had to say afterwards.
