Named after the beautiful rolling hills of the Central Ranges, Australia, the Rolling Estate vineyard starts at 1,800 feet above sea level. The continual cool temperatures and intense high-land sunlight, gives the fruit rich color and bright flavours. Last year the super-premium Barossa Colonial Estate went into receivership and we purchased their entire inventory including all their bottled stock and all their wine that they had been sleeping in brand new French oak barrels. We literally sold out overnight of the super-premium Colonial Exile Barossa Shiraz 2008 which was retailing for $220 a bottle (yes that’s correct $220 for one single bottle). In buying the entire inventory we purchased it at an unbelievable price from the appointed receivers and sold it for $29.99 a bottle A MASSIVE SAVING OF $2280 A DOZEN.

Well my friends we have just bottled up the 2009 vintage and according to some of the Barossa’s finest winemakers and Vignerons this is the best vintage yet.

After a few Coopers beers at Barossa’s Greenock Pub we knocked over a few bottles of Colonial Estate Barossa Exile Shiraz ’09 (actually five bottles) with a group of some of the Barossa’s finest winemakers and Vignerons including a vigneron who has grown Penfolds Grange and several winemakers that have a plethora of trophies, medals and awards behind them. We obviously can’t name our mates because they have their own wines and labels that they need to protect and sell but this is what they had to say about our exceptional wine.

“Epic, an instant classic. The best 2009 vintage wine I have tasted and something I will be putting a few boxes in the cellar and giving the wine more time as I can’t wait to see what happens over the next few years”

“Exile comes from only the finest vineyards in the Barossa’s west, in my opinion the western Barossa is where the great grapes are grown. Colonial Estate had the great advantage of using grapes from the premium sub regions here and more importantly from some of the Barossa’s oldest vines up to 140 years old which wineries all over would die for. I have no issue saying that the grapes used in Exile would make the icon grading system for grapes and the way the grapes are treated both on the vine and after picking is something to marvel at. Exile is my new favourite wine, anywhere and anytime

First taste and I was flattened by the levels of this wine, it has such range from the initial rush of flavours through the mid palate then it finishes so big and stays with you for at least a minute or two. Block 51 Limited Release, Basket Pressed, Greenock Barossa Shiraz 2010

The Block 51 “Basket Pressed” Limited Release Greenock Barossa Shiraz 2010 was sourcedĀ  from superb fruit from the ultra-premium Greenock sub-region in the Barossa Valley.

Only the finest of winemaking skills were adhered to including open fermenters, basket pressing and skillfully aged in the finest of oak. It exhibits an intense deep purple colour and offers rich aromas of plums, blueberries, fruit cake with hits of lavender, black olive and subtle wood spices. It is a full-bodied, rich and fleshy style, with dark chocolate, liquorice and black berry flavours, and soft and supple tannins that support the blue fruit flavours. It is young and fresh and can be enjoyed early or could handle midterm cellaring. It is one of those really unforgettable wines delivering a dark rich purple plethora of flavours.

The 2010 Shiraz was sourced from our two vineyards in the North West of the Barossa, overlooking the Greenock Creek. The fruit was picked over a four week period, which ensured blending options for a more complex finished wine.

The individual parcels were fermented in stainless steel open fermenters, macerated on skins for seven to ten days before basket pressing straight to seasoned French Oak barrels.

The wines were allowed to spontaneously undergo malolactic fermentation and were kept in individual barrels until final blending.

The 2010 Shiraz exhibits an intense deep purple colour and offers rich aromas of plums, blueberries, fruit cake with hints of lavender, black olive and subtle wood spices. It is a full-bodied, rich and fleshy style, with dark chocolate, liquorice and blackberry flavours, and soft and supple tannins that support the blue fruit flavours. It is young and fresh and can be enjoyed early or could handle mid-term cellaring.
